Retractable vs Tilting Louvered Pergolas
Compare retractable and tilting louvered pergolas by roof movement, shade, layout and accessories to find the right option for your outdoor space.
A louvered pergola lets you change the amount of sunlight entering your patio. However, two roofs that look similar when closed can behave very differently when opened. A tilting roof rotates its blades in place. A retractable louvered roof also moves the blades into a compact stack, opening part of the roof area to the sky. Your choice should start with how you want to use that opening.

How the roof moves
On a tilting louvered pergola, the blades remain distributed across the roof while their angle changes. You can adjust shade and ventilation without moving the roof out of its original footprint. This is useful for dining areas where you mainly want to soften direct sunlight.
FengXin’s retractable louver system tilts the blades before drawing them together. This gives you another option when you want more open sky above a lounge or terrace. The final clear opening depends on the roof layout and the space occupied by the stacked blades; retraction should not be described as removing every roof component.
Choose around your daily use
Choose a tilting roof when adjustable shade is the main goal and you prefer blades to stay evenly arranged overhead. Consider a retractable roof when the ability to open more of the roof is an important part of the experience. For a patio beside large windows, compare how each roof position affects the view and the light reaching the house.
Neither design guarantees identical comfort on every site. The direction of the sun, nearby walls and low afternoon sunlight can matter as much as the roof. A side screen may be more useful than changing the blade angle when the sun enters from the west.
Compare the complete configuration
Ask for drawings showing the closed position, the tilted position and, for a retractable model, the stacked position. Confirm module sizes, blade direction, operating clearance and the location of gutters. Then compare the same accessories: lighting, zip screens, glass panels and any optional controls.
A larger patio may need several roof modules, and each module can affect the appearance and operation of the finished pergola. A simple top view helps you decide whether the layout matches your seating area before you compare prices.
Questions buyers often ask
Does a retractable louvered roof also tilt? FengXin’s retractable system does. Check the movement sequence for the exact model you are ordering.
Can either type be enclosed? Screens and glass options may be available, but their dimensions, fixing points and compatibility should be confirmed with the pergola design.
