Zip Screens vs Sliding Glass Doors for a Pergola
Compare zip screens and sliding glass doors for a pergola by shade, privacy, views, ventilation and access before choosing your side enclosure.
Roof shade does not solve every comfort problem on a patio. Low sunlight can enter from the side, neighbouring buildings can affect privacy and an open edge can leave furniture exposed. Zip screens and sliding glass doors address these issues in different ways, so start with the side of the pergola that needs attention.

Choose zip screens for adjustable shade
A zip screen uses fabric guided along side tracks. Depending on the selected fabric, it can reduce direct sunlight and improve privacy while preserving some outward visibility. The screen can be raised when you want the side opening clear.
Check fabric openness, colour and appearance from both directions. Daytime privacy does not automatically mean privacy after dark: interior lighting can change what people see through a screen. Ask for a sample or a demonstration under lighting conditions similar to your patio. Confirm the allowable operating conditions for the specific screen rather than assuming it should remain lowered in any wind.
Choose sliding glass for views and a solid barrier
Sliding glass doors can provide a transparent side barrier while keeping the surroundings visible. The panels open along tracks, so the usable opening depends on the track arrangement and the space where panels overlap or stack. Request a drawing showing the open and closed positions.
Glass alone does not provide much shade from direct sunlight. If the main problem is glare or heat from a sunny side, discuss shading alongside the glazing. Also confirm the glass specification, handles, locks, seals and threshold details. A glass-enclosed pergola is not automatically equivalent to an insulated sunroom.
Plan each side separately
You may want a screen on the side facing afternoon sun and glass on another side where you value the view. The combination should be checked as one system. Roof beams, post positions, accessory mounting and rainwater routes all need to remain compatible.
Measure each opening separately and identify the main entrance. A long pergola side may need more than one accessory unit. Ask how any additional support affects the clear opening, furniture layout and daily movement through the space.
Questions buyers often ask
Can screens and glass be added later? Sometimes, but the initial design should allow for their fixing points, dimensions and operation.
Do glass panels make the space comfortable in every season? Comfort depends on the roof, glazing, shading, ventilation and local climate, not just the presence of glass.
